My Crash Course in Resilient Leadership: Four lessons from a DIY project that almost went wrong

The finished DIY project

I never thought a DIY project would teach me valuable lessons about leadership. But, as I stood in my hallway, holding a heavy light fixture above my head, I realized that this project was more than just a home improvement task. It was a crash course in resilient leadership. Here's how it started...

My wife and I decided to install a complex light fixture in our hallway. Sounds simple, right? Wrong. The task required us to work at a considerable height, and I knew I needed help. So, I enlisted a handyman who wasn't afraid of heights. I realized this project was like many leadership scenarios as we worked together. I had to trust my partner, communicate effectively, and adapt to changing circumstances.

Assembling the giant light

Lesson 1: Adapt and Adjust

We hit a roadblock early on. Our initial approach wasn't working, and we had to climb back down, readjust the ladder, and try again. It was frustrating, but it taught me a crucial lesson: it's okay to change your approach but not your objective. Leaders need to be adaptable and willing to pivot when faced with obstacles.

Think of it like navigating a detour on a road trip. You might need to take a different route, but your destination remains the same. In leadership, being adaptable means being open to new ideas and willing to adjust your strategy when necessary.

Lesson 2: Communicate Clearly

Clear communication was key to our success. My handyman friend provided step-by-step instructions and immediate feedback, which kept us focused and motivated. It was like having a coach in my ear, guiding me through the process.

Leaders can take a similar approach in their professional lives. You can keep your team focused and motivated by offering brief, clear guidance and feedback. It's not about micromanaging; it's about providing the support and direction your team needs to succeed.

Lesson 3: Stay Positive

Despite careful planning, we made a mistake and had to start over. It was tempting to get frustrated, but we maintained a positive outlook and viewed the setback as an opportunity to learn and improve. This experience highlighted the importance of a growth mindset in leadership.

When faced with challenges, it's easy to get discouraged. But, as leaders, we must stay positive and focus on finding solutions. Doing so can inspire our teams to persevere and overcome obstacles.

Lesson 4: Overcome Fear

As the challenges mounted, I began to doubt our ability to succeed. Fear crept in, and I worried about losing my grip on the light or jeopardizing my friend's safety. But, by drawing on adaptability, clear communication, and a positive attitude, we overcame our fears and completed the project.

Leaders face similar fears and doubts in high-pressure situations. But, by using these same skills, we can navigate difficult situations and inspire our teams to persevere.

Putting it all Together

Becoming a resilient leader is a journey that often requires support and guidance. Leaders benefit from mentorship and collaboration just like I needed help with my DIY project. Remember that even the most complex challenges can be overcome with the right mindset and support.

So, the next time you're faced with a difficult situation, take a step back and remember these four lessons:

1. Adapt and adjust your approach when necessary

2. Communicate clearly and provide feedback

3. Stay positive and focus on finding solutions

4. Overcome fear and doubt by drawing on your strengths

By applying these lessons, you'll become a better leader and build stronger relationships with your team. And, who knows, you might find that your next DIY project becomes a valuable learning experience, too.
