Imagine being offered a chance to participate in a high-stakes leadership game. The rules are simple: you have one day to prepare your team, and then they must achieve their goals without any further guidance from you for 30 days. The prize? A cool million dollars if they succeed. Sounds enticing, right?

But there's a catch:

ree

if your team fails, you'll owe a million dollars back. That's a significant risk, enough to make even the most seasoned executives think twice. In a room of 100 leaders, I'd estimate that only about 10% would be willing to take on this challenge.

This scenario isn't just hypothetical; it's a reality that many senior leaders face when managing teams of managers of managers. You can't be there to guide them every step of the way, and you must trust that your instructions and their abilities will be enough to get the job done.

The Challenges of High-Stakes Leadership

The pressure is real, and the stakes are high. But let's be clear: the million-dollar payback is unlikely to happen in real life. However, the consequences of not meeting company objectives can be severe. The pressure to perform is there, a weight that leaders must carry. But another aspect to this challenge is just as important: the personal risk involved.

High-Stakes Leadership Dilemma: When Leaders Compromise Themselves

This scenario also causes leaders to compromise themselves because of the significant upside/risk involved. When the stakes are this high, leaders may feel pressured to prioritize short-term gains over long-term values and make decisions that aren't in the team's or the organization's best interest. This trap can lead to burnout, decreased morale, and a loss of trust.

So, how do leaders approach this kind of challenge? Let's look at two different examples.

Leader 1: The Hands-On Leader

This leader spends the entire prep day giving detailed, step-by-step instructions for every possible scenario. They leave no room for ambiguity or adaptation, fearing that the team won't be able to handle unexpected challenges.

Leader 2: The Empowering Leader

This leader takes a different approach. They focus on communicating the overall mission and values to the team, encouraging them to think for themselves and problem-solve based on these principles. They create an environment where the team feels empowered and capable of achieving success, even without the leader's constant guidance.

Can you guess which leader wins the contest? It's Leader 2, the Empowering Leader. This approach requires a different set of skills and muscles, but it's essential for success at higher levels of leadership.

Essential Skills for High-Stakes Leadership

To succeed in high-stakes leadership, leaders need to master the following skills:

  • Crystal-Clear Communication: There's no room for ambiguity in high-stakes leadership. Leaders must be able to convey complex ideas with simplicity and precision.

  • Visionary Thinking: Leaders need to be able to see the big picture and communicate it effectively. They must paint a vivid picture so their team can see it even if they're not there.

  • Strategic Planning: Leaders need to anticipate challenges and plan for contingencies their team might face.

  • Trust-Building: Trust is the glue that holds everything together. Without trust, the whole structure falls apart when the leader steps away.

  • Growth Mindset: Teach your key leaders how to take setbacks as learnings and move forward applying those learnings.

By applying these principles of value-based leadership and honing these crucial skills, you'll be well on your way to competing and winning in high-stakes leadership situations. But more importantly, you'll be able to lead with integrity without compromising your values or your team's well-being.
